Where vintage hobby meets modern city: a QSL card carrying the same call sign — W5JXP — first licensed in 1930s Texas, now transmitting from Austin. The background photo captures West 6th Street on a rainy night, neon reflecting off wet asphalt, skyscrapers veiled in fog. A long way from a Corpus Christi garage and a broken-down radio.

W5JXP - Daniel R. Thomas

Dan was encouraged to learn Morse code in 1975 at the age of 10 by his father (the original W5JXP), but didn't manage to get around to getting his license until 2026. He found it difficult to remember his own call sign of KJ5PHF after so many years of hearing "W5 Japan X-ray Pacific" repeated over and over, so applied for his dad's old call sign almost immediately. He's now getting used to, "Whiskey Five Juliet X-ray Papa", and hopes to keep up the family tradition a few more years.
